August 10th, 1st Session
Marcus Roderick, Alena Roderick, and Brandr Snow had been invited to go to Deepwood Motte for a festival that was being held there. They spent 2 weeks there taking in the sights, smells, and entertainments. While traveling back towards Wayport the group came upon a broken down carriage that was stuck in the mud. A man was trying to get the carriage unstuck while a heavyset woman was yelling at him. A pretty young woman was in the carriage but she wasn't saying much. Marcus introduced the group vaguely, and then told Brandr to help get them out of the mud. Brandr made himself be a stepping stone to help them get out without getting muddy. They got the carriage moving again, and were invited back to the Inn where the woman Wyna ran things. It turned out that Wyna ran a sort of "Go Between" business for ransoms.
When the group arrived at the inn rough looking twins came out, both a little drunk, and they were treating Lady Woodtower (the woman from the carriage) like a sack of potatoes that they swung up on their shoulders. The twins turned out to be Wyna's nephews. Inside there was a man with his boots on the table. It turned out that this man Beau Hune was going to be the husband of the Lady Woodtower because her father couldn't pay the ransom. She didn't seem like she liked that prospect very much. Marcus managed to acquire the girl with a bit of intimidation with a dash of political sway due to his status. It seemed however that by doing it this way... it broke tradition which made Wyna unhappy.
On the way to Wayport they were later ambushed by Wyna and her nephews. Flaming arrows were shot at the group but this only aided Brandr to shoot one of the twins in the guts and then later in the back. The burning arrows however spooked the horses, and they only managed to recapture Brandr's horse. Marcus ran towards them and cleaved another one of the twins in half, and then grabbed Wyna by the neck. He then passed her off to Alena, who in turn had her shadowcat rip out her throat. During this time, Brandr was putting Lady Woodtower on his horse. Beau Hune came out of the woods and put a knife to Brandr's throat. He in turn whipped the horse with his bow and then bit into the neck of Beau Hune. The horse went running off down the road with Lady Woodtower's screams filling the night air. In a blind rage Brandr slaughtered Beau, and turned his skull into a red ruin, continually smashing in the flesh way past the moment when he breathed his last. Alena calmed him down after a good while. Then they met up with Lady Woodtower who had calmed the horse.
Brandr hid the bodies in a ravine, but he had a strange vision of darkness with a center of light, the ravine looking perhaps like some hole in the world that he could tumble into and never return. The yells of his family members brought him out of it, he finished up the gruesome task and then returned to the group. They then continued on their journey.
They finally arrived in Wayport after a long day's travel through the night. Sunrise greeted them, but the ship that they expected to find there... wasn't there. They learned from the Mayor of the port named Simian that the Lady's father had died and she was the only heir, and that she was missing. It seemed fate would have it that she ended up right in their lap. They stayed the night in their tower, and planned to head out later in the day after they rested. Alena cleaned up a fretful and worried Brandr, and though he tried to refuse the comfort and help she offered she could tell he appreciated it. Marcus stayed in the Lady's room to make sure she was safe.
