Jupiter's Io
Controlled by: None
Mean Surface Temperature: -143 C / -225 F
Gravity: Very Low
Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, outstripping even the recent addition of Seyal. It is also one of the most lethal environments imaginable, very nearly as deadly as Venus was before Xe-Labs began terraforming Venus. It is difficult to imagine a terrain that more closely approximates the traditional vision of Hell than that found on this moon. Volcanic eruptions are common place on Io. Magma plumes reach as high as 300 to 400 kilometers above the surface of the moon. The terrain is constantly being changed by these conditions. Eruptions can last for weeks or months at a time. Mountains of razor sharp rock loom around mighty volcanoes and caldera several kilometers deep pock the surface.
Enormous lakes of molten sulfur scar the ravaged surface. It is lined with semi-viscous molten sodium, silicate rock and sulfur that stretch for hundreds of kilometers. It is a place of great extremes and the temperature fluctuates between -183 C and up to 1,727 C around the areas of the volcanoes. The gasses emitted by the volcanic action can be collected, and some brave corporations do this. Io generates a lot of magnetic and electric energy. The brutal gravitational forces exerted on Io by the other moons and Jupiter cause Io to wobble.
In 2163 the fledgling Eather CGC designated this moon as a penal colony. Several enormous gas refineries and energy collection facilities were constructed on the surface of Io for these prisoners to work in. A remote facility in orbit around the moon was the only soldiers that kept the prisoners on the surface in line. Fresh air and food would be provided if the gas was refined. If not... then the prisoners would suffocate or starve depending on the resources that they were left with. This went on for 200 years.
In 2383 a massive eruption engulfed the orbiting stations and killed all on board. All but two of the facilities on the surface of the moon were destroyed as well. The CGC abandoned the moon entirely and the prisoners were given a death sentence. Many of these prisoners were eventually rescued by Maverick gangs. Many of these prisoners became indentured servants until they could pay off for the cost of their rescue. "As mean as Io" became a phrase to many Mavericks who dwelt there for a time. They thought of the moon as their enemy, a living breathing evil that was doing all in its power to destroy them.
